It’s the start of a new year and The Big Band Double Header is back. Its going to be a great January 2025 with plenty of live music playing to keep dancers happy on the dance floor.
Every other month, our friends – The Velvet Tones, present the Big Band Double Header. We are very lucky in Oxford as we get to enjoy live music on a regular basis. There is nothing quite like dancing to a Big Band. The connection between musicians and dancers can produce something very special. The band have spent the last 2 months in rehearsal and have a big gig coming up in early February. They are now ready for their practice performance and will have the full band in the lineup. Both Claire and Richard will take turns on the mic along with the full set of instrumental numbers from great bands of the era. This is a free entry gig with donations requested and expected for a nominated charity of the night. The suggested donation is £6. Don’t forget to hold something back for the famous £2, 2 prize raffle, It features the finest bottle of sparkling wine that the local supermarket’s bargain rack has to offer.
This month there is another great band visiting Oxford as The Velvet Tones’ guests. The legendary Bob Cutting Big Band led by that ageless, timeless magician of the trumpet himself. He is the Man With The Horn. The fabulous Bob Cutting himself!
The Bob Cutting Big Band At The Big Band Double Header January 2025
For those that don’t know Bob was lead trumpet player in the Herb Miller Band which carried on the music of Herb’s famous brother Glenn. They toured back in the 90s with Simon Selmon & Rusty Frank as their featured dancers. Bob has had a career spanning the decades and met many of the greats.
It was back in 1972, when a young Bob Cutting joined the Eddie Curtis Orchestra. He worked, recorded and toured as lead trumpet/soloist with The John Miller Orchestra and before that the Herb Miller Orchestra. This was the beginning of a professional career in performing and teaching that brings us to today. There have been other notable freelance ventures with various bands and shows such as Swings the Thing, Debbie Curtis Radio Big Band, The Joe Loss Orchestra, The Ray McVay Orchestra and The Glenn Miller UK band being a few to note.
Bob has now led multiple bands in Oxford with the one that bears his name, now an established as one of the best in the area. It’s always enlightening to have a chat with Bob about the days of the Big Band sound and the relationship between the music, the musicians and the dance floor.
Seesaw
Every month the musicians play in support of a charity of the night and this month it is Seesaw. Seesaw are a children’s charity who help them and young people in times of grief and bereavement. Please support them generously and read about their work on their website.
This is a free event but we do suggest a donation to the charity
The event is free but a £6 donation to the charity of the night is both appreciated and expected. That really isn’t much to pay for a great night of live music with a dance floor. The venue provides a cash/card bar, free car parking and a warm welcome. Please also don’t forget the already-legendary £2 – 2 Prize Raffle which features 2 bottles of the finest sparkling wine that the local bargain supermarket can offer.
This is an opportunity for a great night of dancing and we hope you can join us for the evening at the Big Band Double Header January 2025. This and all events will be added to the Google Calendar on the website.
