Thursday night (16th May 2024) sees the return of The Big Band Double Header May 2024 edition. The Velvet Tones will welcome The Donut Kings to their stage for another evening of Big Band Jazz Swing and dancing.

It all happens at Oxford Golf Club, Hill Top Road, Oxford, OX4 1PF. The music starts at 8:00pm and goes on until 10:30pm.

The Big Band Double Header has been a feature of the Swing Dance Summertown Calendar for many years now. It goes back to the days of Oxford Swing Dance Society when we all got together because we wanted to dance to live music regularly in Oxford.

Therefore we have a special affinity with The Velvet Tones and are very happy to support them in their charitable work through this event. There is always a nominated charity of the night and this month that is The Gatehouse charity in Oxford

The Gatehouse

The Gatehouse supports Oxford’s homeless community. Founded in 1988 they offer a wide range of free services and activities to adults who are homeless, vulnerably housed, on low or no income. They help everyone challenged by homelessness. They do this either directly or simply looking provide company and community from their drop-in community centre in Woodstock Road.

The Donut Kings at the Big Band Double Header

This month The Velvet Tones are joined onstage by The Donut Kings from Oxford. They compromise Jazz musicians from Oxford University’s student population. The Donut Kings are Oxford University’s most active big band. They have been charming audiences across Oxford since 2001. With entertainment value and musical excellence at its heart, the band has consistently delivered engaging performances for over twenty years, performing at Commemoration Balls, Jazz Festivals, Weddings, Private Functions, and Charity Events. Their lineups have recorded multiple albums and toured internationally.

The event is free entry, but a contribution to the charity of the night is both appreciated and expected. In return you see two live bands play. There is a dance floor, lots of parking at the event, and a bar to help you enjoy the evening. Don’t forget to hold some coins back for the £2 – 2 prize Raffle that will take place during the break. It features the finest bottle of sparkling wine that the bargain bin of the local super market can provide! The raffle helps to secure the cost of the venue and so it is a really great way to support the event.

There is always a very strong Summertown presence on the Dance Floor and so it would be wonderful if you could join us.
